Tornado Rampages Through Tushka, Oklahoma

  • Sunday, April 17, 2011
Two F 3 tornados swept through the small, rural town of Tushka Oklahoma Thursday, killing two sisters and injuring 25, Salvation Army Capt. Ric Swartz said.   Many of Tushka’s residents were saved by the 90 year old underground shelter built right by the Tushka Public School.

"About a quarter of the town’s population — crammed into the main shelter, a 45-foot underground, concrete tube, to seek protection from storms that began in Oklahoma and have killed at least 39 people in five states. There were children and dogs huddled with the adults on the dirt floor, the dank smell of concrete around them.  The tornado hit, and for 10 minutes the sound was deafening. A cedar tree crashed to earth near one entrance of the shelter. A car was flipped over and landed next to another. Wind howled down the air vents in the ceiling and stirred up dirt and debris." (NY Times)

“They were screaming: Get down! Get Down! Protect your head!” Ms. Davis recalled.  But they survived!   The building overhead did not.  Nor did 100 nearby homes."

The American Red Cross and Rev. Mixon of the Atoka First Baptist Church spoke of the 200 or so children who are now homeless and without a school to call their own.   It is not known where classes will resume but 200 Hugs Across America teddies are on the way to help provide a special hug as these youngsters, who have lost so much, adjust to a new reality.

Japanese Tsunami Relief

  • Tuesday, March 15, 2011
We are joining the efforts of Operation Teddy Care in preparing teddies for the children impacted by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  They are setting up drop off centers up and down the West coast in preparation for shipping bears to Japan.

If you have interest in helping with this project please let me know and I will get specific information to you. It may be a while before this can be implemented, as shelters in the affected area are remote and food, water and medicine go in first...but the children will need comforting as well as the hope that comes from knowing that people care.  The hug of a teddy can do just that.

In NYC I am preparing teddies for youngsters in our area who have family in the devastated areas.
We can make a difference.    Join us!!    Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved.

Basketball Star Dies on Court

  • Sunday, March 06, 2011

sport_a_wleonard_sy_300FENNVILLE, Mich. -- One moment: a perfect shot to end a perfect season. The star player, just 16, lifted off the floor in celebration. Teenagers triumphant, crowds cheering, the district playoffs ahead, the future open wide.

The next: Wes Leonard on the gym floor, his heart failing, his life fading just a few moments after his victory layup. Packed bleachers suddenly stunned by an event that made basketball seem a distant, unimportant memory.

A day after Leonard died from an enlarged heart, this small town near Lake Michigan remembered an "all-American kid" whose athletic heroics had been local legend since middle school, when opposing coaches sometimes asked to see his birth certificate, not believing someone so young could be so skilled.

"He was a good kid, a good friend to have and a good person to hang around with," DeMarcus McGee, who played football and basketball with Leonard, said between sobs. "You never thought it could be him. He was so healthy. It shouldn't happen."

The guidance counselor from Wes’s Fennville High School, spoke of needing to comfort the many elementary school students who witnessed the game and sudden death. Friends and family will grieve for Wes and try to make sense of this tragedy. 50 teddies will be there to help.

New York City Red Cross

  • Sunday, March 06, 2011

39991From January 1, 2011 through February 28, 2011 in Brooklyn, the chapter:

  • Responded to 131 fires and other emergencies
  • Assisted 888 adults and children with food, shelter and/or counseling following a disaster
  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week our Red Cross staff and volunteers are on call to help families affected by a fire with financial assistance for emergency food, clothing and shelter as well as much-needed comfort and support. That’s where hugs teddies come in. The NYC chapter of the American Red Cross deals with 7 emergencies every day and is delighted to have our help as they provide teddies and comfort for traumatized children. Most are victims of house fires, floods, neighborhood or family violence and other circumstances where they have to leave or loose their homes. Hugs Across America reaches out to children in tragic situations in every state in the country and beyond, but the NYC Red Cross is under siege on a daily basis. Meeting their needs will be a challenge, and we ask your support.
